This is a very large cologne bottle, with original stopper, in Hawkes’ Holland design. Both pieces are signed with the Hawkes’ trademark.

A huge eight-pointed star sits atop a point of crosshatching. In between each one are two stacked, deep hobstars framed on either side with fan cutting. The base is covered with a fanned star and the stopper is lapidary cut.

This cologne is nearly twice the size of most – measuring nearly 8″ tall and 5″ wide. The blank, as with most pieces of Holland, is exceptionally clear.

Possibly Tuthill’s most desirable design, the Wild Rose pattern displays beautifully on this smaller basket. It is the ideal combination between geometric and realistic engraving that Tuthill was particularly skilled with. It is signed with the Tuthill trademark.

Each of the four panels of engraving on this basket are slightly different. Sometimes featuring full blooms, other times buds, with leaves in various places. The depth and realistic nature of the intaglio is astonishing. Each panel is divided by tight hobnail which leads to a pointed hobstar. The rim is finished in silvery crosshatching and both serrated and finished with a point. Even the twist rope handle has a bit of engraving at the ends!

The basket is in perfect condition and measures 6 1/4” long, 5” tall, and 4 1/2” wide. These baskets have always been particularly popular among distinguished character and are definitely some of the best of the Brilliant Period.

What a beautiful set this is – matched in Libbey’s ever-desirable Ellsmere pattern. I particularly like the untraditional shaped pitcher which Libbey saved for some of their finest work. All seven pieces in the set are signed with the saber-mark.

The Ellsmere pattern adapts excellently to the shape of this pitcher. A flat hobstar is flanked on either side by two bands of triple-miter cane. Rising from this area toward the center of the pitcher is fine crosshatching met with deeply cut notched prism. All the tumblers are cut to match and have particularly deep cutting for drinking glasses.

The pitcher is 7 3/4” tall and over 7” wide. There are six tumblers measuring 3 7/8” tall, 3” wide. The set is in remarkable, perfect condition. The blanks, like most Ellsmere, are perfectly clear and the set sparkles with the brilliance you should expect of glass from this period of art.

This tray was likely made by either Quaker City or Taylor Brothers. The resembelance to Taylor Brothers’ work may be more obvious to some collectors, but Quaker city was known to cut on thick, clear blanks for their better patterns – this one very much reminds me of the cutting done on the DuBarry pattern. The shape of the tray is cradle like, with higher ends than the remainder of the piece.

What obviously sets this piece apart upon first look is the edge-it’s what’s refereed to as a colonial edge, but whoever cut it took an extra step and added a coined edge to both the interior and exterior. Large, clusters of hobstars are traced with a wide, clear miter that circles throughout the entire pattern. The center portion of the design features hexagonal figures filled with either hobstars, hobnail, or cane. The border is decorated with heavy hobnail cutting that runs into the aforementioned colonial edge.

This design is quite rare – I have only ever seen 3 other pieces in it and I own two of them. The tray is in great condition save for one small area of roughness on the edge. The blank is second to none – thick, clear and radiant. This is a stunning example of an unknown, under-appreciated pattern.

This extmemely large basket was made by H.P. Sinclaire during the Brilliant Period. It is signed with the Sinclaire trademark. Sinclaire was a master of combining cutting and engraving and this piece is a perfect example of some of the beautiful artistry they produced.

The engraving looks to be a stylized sunflower. Each sprouts from the base in four large, clear fields. Split, crosshatched vesicas also shoot from the base much like Hawkes’ Venetian design and are topped with large hobstars and fans. The base is finished with a hobstar and the edge is done in engraved dots. This same engraving is used all along the very dramatically angled handle.

Again, this basket is gigantic, measuring 15″ tall and a staggering 13 1/2″ across the rim. It’s free of any damage save for some very light scratches. I have never seen this shape for a basket, but it is completely functional in addition to displaying elegantly unfilled.

This bowl was likely cut by J. Hoare – a company that made many weaving patterns like this including the most desirable – Wedding Ring/Crystal City. This bowl, like Wedding Ring, features different motifs on each ring and clear tusk cutting. It is an older piece, unsigned, and features silky wood-wheel polishing.

The variety of motifs mixed in this piece is flabbergasting. Complex and intricate don’t begin to describe it. The most used motif is Russian cutting. That weavs with a band of diamond fields of crosshatching. The edge of the bowl is finished with four fans. The center of the bowl is not to be ignored and features four petals of clear-tusk cutting (took a great amount of skill to achieve) surrounded by notching.

The beautiful piece measures 8 7/8″ wide and 4 3/8″ tall. It’s in perfect condition with hardly a scratch on it. The blank is radiant and the wood wheel polish brings out the leaded crystal’s natural fire.

Kensington was one of Hawkes most detailed designs. They reserved it for many special, elaborate pieces, this bowl included. This bowl is over-sized and quite heavy – it is signed in the center with the Hawkes Trademark.

The center of the Kensington pattern is essentially made up of a large 8-pointed star formation. The center of this formation features a large hobstar and the points of the formation feature two tiny hobstars separated by a triple miter motif. The smaller of the two hobstars is  perfectly executed and smaller than a fingernail.  Falling in between the points of the 8-pointed star are undulating motifs of tiny hobstars and kohinoor fields. The exterior portion of the pattern features eight large deeply cut hobstars.

Again, this bowl is over-sized – measuring just under 10 1/2″ wide and 4 1/2″ tall. It is on a heavy, thick (just 1/2″ thick!), and clear blank that rings with pleasing bell-like tone when tapped.

While Tuthill is most commonly known for their realistic, engraved work, they acheived some very richly, fine cut patterns. This is great example – it uses the exact same border of Tuthill’s Wild Rose design, but has all geometric work on the interior of the pattern. It is signed in the center with the Tuthill trademark.

Vesicas of hobnail framed by notching spur off the central hobstar of the design. These vesicas come to a sharp point at a flat hobstar. In between each vesica is a branch of notching with fans that leads to a deeply cut, flashed hobstar. The border of the bowl really makes the pattern pop – silvery crosshatching frames everything so well, especially at the points of flat hobstars.

The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 9″ wide. It’s on a gorgeous blank. This is clearly a very rare pattern – I’ve never seen it before and uses some of Tuthill’s best work.

This is a very heavy decanter on what I believe is a Dorflinger blank. I have had the same blank in Dorflinger’s Mandarin with a pattern-cut stopper as well. The cutting is not typical of Dorflinger and more likely the work of another company.

The blank is very thick and heavy which leads to tons of deep relief around the hobstars that adorn the perimeter of the decanter. Fans, spurring in either direction, divide each hobstar and a band of cane runs around the top of the pattern. Working towards the back of the decanter, there is notched prism and crosshatching framing the handle. The handle is fluted and notched. The stopper is a work of art – gorgeous, clear glass with a cane band and fluting and notching. The base of the decanter is covered with a deep hobstar.

The decanter is in perfect condition and on a stunning, clear blank. Great decanters like this, with stoppers this nice are a true rarity in ABP glass. Whoever made this, really went the extra mile.

This is a gorgeous blowout in Hawkes early Persian pattern. The entire piece is quite sharp, yes wood wheel polished. The blank is quite unusual with an almost four leaf base with the sides of the bowl pinching in the center. I have sold this exact bowl, in years past, in excess of $1,000. I believe Hawkes executed Persian better than the other early companies that cut this design.

Persian is setup very closely to the Russian design. The main difference lies in what is on each button – in this case, a clear-center hobstar. The pattern, with the countless intersecting cuts, reflects light and sparkles like a brilliant diamond.

The condition is excellent – I find nothing wrong with it. The blank is clear and again, wood-wheel polished. The bowl measures 9 1/2″ long, 8 1/2″ wide, and 3 1/2″ tall.

These circular patterns are some of the most popular of the Brilliant Period and it’s readily apparent why. This one, in Fry’s Duquesne features interlocking circles of a variety of motifs that are aesthetically pleasing without over-complicating the design. Trays of this size are extremely rare and highly-desirable.

Three chains of “shooting” hobstars fill out one circle in the design. One tail of the shooting chain is made of triple-miter cane while the other two are split notching. The other circle is filled with two larger hobstars, fan, additional notching and crosshatching. The portion of the pattern that both circles share features sharply cut crosshatching while the center of the tray features a 20-point hobstar.

Again the tray is quite large- measuring in at 13 1/2″ wide. The blank is exceptionally clear and lets the pattern shine with clarity and radiance. Most plates in these circular patterns are 9 or 12″ wide, so to find one this large is a true rarity.

This is an extremely impressive flared vase. I have seen this blank cut in Nordica by Blackmer, but do not know who made it. The amount of relief and depth of cutting, particularly at the base, is unbelievably striking. Obviously, to cut this deeply, the blank had to be quite thick to begin – the vase weighs close to 10 pounds.

Three stacked hobstars climb the upper portion of this vase. The are framed with split diamond cutting filled with crosshatching. Notching surrounds either side of these hobstars and runs into a sprouting deep fan towards the rim of the vase. Detailed, flat hobstars and crosshatching alternate with the aforementioned motif. The neck of the piece is step cut and leads into a very bulbous base. The base, as I mentioned, is extremely deeply cut. from the base or side, the depth is hard to fathom and plays a trick on the eye. I’ve tried to capture this in photos, but it’s impossible to capture how far the cutter was able to get his wheel into this thick glob of glass. The base is finished with a hobstar.

The vase is in perfect condition and measures 14″ tall and a full 7″ wide. Again, it’s particularly heavy and well cut – I have not seen another like it.
