This is the third auction from Criticalglass and features over 150 items of carefully selected cut glass. Rare patterns, shapes and everything in between are being featured in this sale. These high-quality, fine examples of American Brilliant Cut Glass were hand-selected by us with some being pulled from my own collection of 25 years along with some items from important collections from around the country.

This great handled vase was cut and signed by Hawkes. They thought very highly of this piece as they cut it in cranberry cut to clear as well!

Two deep hobstars are stacked on teh side of the pitcher with 8 pointed star sepearting them above and below each one. Croasshatching and tight, deep miters cover the rest of the piece and the base is covered with a 24-point hobstar. The handles of this piece are incredible and covered with 8-point hobstars and crosscuts ending with a fan – Hawkes gave this treatment to some of their top pieces.

The vase is in excellent condition with just some minor roughness around the base and measures.

This vase is signed Hawkes and features an perfect “pie-crust” rim. The pattern features deep hobstars around the rim, fans and clear punties while the entire neck is covered with strawberry-diamond cutting that looks like it’s unfolding like an orange peel around the vase.. The base features a Hawkes style pyramidal star.
The vase is in great condition but the base does have a couple of tiny flakes, the largest of which you can see in the photo of the base. Measures 13 1/2″ tall and 6 1/2″ wide.

This extra heavy champagne was cut in Dorflinger’s Holland pattern. This was Dorflinger’s most expensive pattern and subsequently, one of their rarest. It’s also one of the few patterns by Dorflinger with clear-tusk cutting.

Four large hobstars are framed by clear tusk cutting around the bowl of this stem. Each of these hobstars is divided by a smaller hobstar with notching coming to a point. The stem is extremely impressive with a air-trap knob that is cut in hob-diamond. The base of the champagne is cut with a hobstar and scalloped around the edge on a thick blank.

Stems like this seldom come to market. This one is in perfect condition.

This incredible punch set was cut by Maple City Cut Glass at the turn of the century. Temple was their best design and this piece shows extremely quality throughout.

The punch bowl is ‘cut-to-pieces’ on every inch, featuring a rich hobstar pattern with deep miters that nearly pierce through the bowl. The edge is treated with a paired tooth motif that can be seen in other Maple City designs. Even rarer is to find this set with matching cups AND a ladle.

This top quality piece measures 14″ wide and 14″ tall. It’s in perfect condition and on the finest, clear blanks.

While Hawkes’ Queens design might not be difficult to find on a vase or pitcher, it’s extremely difficult to find on stemware like these pieces. Offered are 3 sizes – red wine, white wine, and a tiny cordial. All pieces are signed with either the Hawkes trefoil or the word Hawkes.

The pattern displays itself beautifully on these items – 2 stacked hobstars are divided on both sides by clear punty cutting which provides a beautiful optical effect.  The stems are fluted and notched in a particularly unusual way – the notches increase in size and depth towards the bowl of the stem.

The cordials, which are the hardest of the pack to get are 3 1/2″ tall and 1 1/2″ wide. They are $250 each and I have 3.

The white wines are 4 1/4″ tall, 2″ wide and are $150 each. I have 7

The red wines wines are 4 1/2″ tall, 2″ wide and $175 each. I have 3

These extremely unusual stems were cut in a variation of the Persian design in amber cut to clear. These may have been cut by L. Straus as this stem type was done by them along with some cut to clear stemware along with this type of hobstar base. While there appears to be some blue/green in the photo, it’s only a reflection – these are a yellowish/gold/amber.

The Persian design extends on the lower bout of the bowl of the flut. A lapidary knob sits below that along with a flutted and notched, air-trap stem. The bases are covered in a clear center hobstar.

The stems are in perfect condition and measure 6 3/4″ tall and 2 3/4″ wide.  Price is $800 for the pair or $425 each.

This platter was cut in Libbey’s own variation of their Ellsmere design. It is signed in the center with the Libbey trademark.
The center of the tray looks like exploding fireworks with alternating panels of deep hobstars and expanding fans. The rim is more similar to Ellsmere with a rounded scallop encasing a deep miter, notching and triple miter cane.
The blank of this tray is exquisite and shockingly clear. It’s in perfect condition and measures 11 3/4″ wide and 2″ tall.

I have 1 of these very well done cranberry cut to clear wine glasses in the Russian pattern left. Russian was cut by many different companies prior to the patent process, but these were likely cut by Dorflinger, Hawkes, or J. Hoare.

The Russian pattern expands across the bowl of this stem – with so many miters the contrast between clear and the cranberry casing is stunning. The stem of the wine is fluted and notched and the base is finished with a 26-point rayed star.

The stems are in perfect condition and measure just over 4 1/2″ tall and and just over 2 1/2″ wide. Price is per stem.

There are bowls and then there are BOWLS! This bowl was cut by the masterS at American Cut Glass company which was founded by William C. Anderson. He served as their top designer and is widely regarded as one of the most unique artists of the period. I have only ever had one other piece in this design and it’s not only rare, but also top tier in quality.

Pretty much every variety of cutting imaginable adorns this bowl, but somehow it doesn’t come off as overly busy. It’s well laid out and aesthetically please and is one of my favorite designs. The center of the bowl features triple-miter trellis with clear buttoned hobstars. Moving outward from that is the tiniest, most accurately cut Russian forming a circle in the center of the piece. On the outer portion of the bowl, there is a crossed formation of jeweled-center hobstars and triple-miter cane. The cane moves along to frame the upper portion of a large, wedding-cake hobstar. This hobstar is framed on all side by diamond-point hexad, which was one of the toughest and most seldom-seen motifs of the period. The bowl is truly a masterpiece.

It’s in perfect condition and measures 8″ wide and 3 1/2″ tall. It’s on a stunning blank and is polished to perfection.
