Copper wheel engraving doesn’t get better than this! This ewer features exceptional detail and was likely an engraver’s masterpiece work. I believe it’s of European origin – there are a few pieces, on this blank in, in the book “British Glass.” They’re all in museums and I consider this piece better in many ways. For starters, the size is unheard of – measuring 15″ tall and 9″ WIDE! Please see the photo of it next to a standard 12″ vase.
The ewer features 3 pairs of birds (two fighting). Then, starting from the top, all types of insects from the top down – all different. Most pieces with insects feature only one to two types. This has 8. Additionally, the handle is seamlessly engraved from the body. The pictures speak for themselves – I have never seen another piece quite like this one.
The piece is in excellent condition. It was likely made by a top engraver at Webb for presentation – significantly larger than all others like it.
