World Class Hawkes Imperial 12″ Plate – SOLD |
This is the sort of piece I take great pride in offering – a large plate in Hawkes’ extremely rare Imperial pattern. Imperial is a triple-miter trellis style pattern, but is better than its other similar patterns – the cutting is most often more condensed, brilliant and significantly deeper. This 12″ plate is signed proudly with the Hawkes trademark in the center. This pattern, on a 10″ bowl brought $12,500 a few years ago at Woody Auction in June 2011. That’s more than the asking price for this tray which is significantly more valuable and rarer.
There’s not much more that I can say here than the pictures can’t provide you with. Deeply cut triple miter trellis covers the entire surface of this pate. The hobstars protrude in large knobs as a result of all the glass the cutter removed with the triple-miters. The cutting is over 1/4″ deep in some places. The effect is both astounding and captivating. Because of all of the brilliant cutting, the piece radiates even when not well lit. This is one of the best cut glass plates ever made.
The plate is in excellent condition with only some light surface scratches and a couple of tiny, rough spots in the cutting. The blank is first rate and measures 12″ wide and 2″ tall. This is the only one of these plates I’ve ever seen in this size – this is the type of piece that will always appreciate over time.
