Absolutely Stunning Hawkes Kensington Ice Cream Set – SOLD |
Skip the description and check out the pictures first – they speak for themselves! This is a 7 piece (one large tray and 6 smaller plates) ice cream set cut in Hawkes highly desirable and extremely well-done Kensington pattern. All pieces are signed Hawkes. It should go without saying that sets like this are among the most desirable items in all of cut glass – and ones in rare patterns like this rarely are offered for sale.
The Kensington pattern is one of the most wonderful expanding-star type patterns. Rich hobstar, after rich hobstar sprout from the center. Following from a large, central hobstar are 8 spurs which encapsulate one large, hobstar and one smaller, clear-button hobstar. Each of these stars is separated by a deep triple miter cutting much like Hawkes’ Panel pattern. Nestled between each spur is yet another rich hobstar with awesome kohinoor cutting shooting off in either direction. The edge of the plates are covered with a band of even larger hobstars at the edge. The smaller plates are stunning, meticulous works of art. To fit that much cutting on that much real estate was a supreme task. Often times, on smaller pieces like this, patterns are sacrificed with certain details being left out – these plates however, have ever tiny detail nailed perfectly. Look how many deep hobstars (with actual hobs) there are on the plates!
The set together is nothing short of breathtaking. It shines and sparkles like no other. All pieces are in perfect condition with only some minor scratching on the surfaces. The larger plate measures an even 12″ in diameter an 1 1/2″ tall. The smaller plates measure 7 1/4″ wide and just under 1″ tall. This is one of the best sets Hawkes ever made and would be at home in any advanced collection.
I have 5 more 7″ plates that I would be glad to offer to the purchaser of the set or individual buyers.
