This wonderful fruit bowl was cut by J. Hoare in their Napoleon design. It’s featured in their catalog, but also prominently in Spillman’s T.G. Hawkes and his Competitors. The bowl is signed in the center with the Hoare trademark.
A 90 degree arrangment of triple miter trellis makes up this design. Giant, hobstar-topped knobs are left in the relief of the cutting – which contorts the design to different depths throughout – the pattern almost looks folded onto the piece, not unlike an orange segment being pulled back.
There are few examples of this design as nice as this piece and it’s no wonder why this specific piece remains at the top of so many collectors’ list. The piece is in perfect condition and on the clearest of blanks.
