Rare Straus Arabesque Rollover Bowl – SOLD |
This is a beautiful rollover bowl in Straus’s seldom-seen Arabesque pattern. This is the first piece I’ve ever had in this design and only the second I’ve ever seen. One thing particularly unusual about the piece is how it almost appears offset in the way they fit the pattern to the bowl. The reason for this being Straus had to align the pattern to the fan portion at the edge which makes the rest of the pattern appear offset. I think this small distinction makes the bowl all the more unique.
Triple miter notched bands weave throughout the entire piece. They make the framework for panels with two varities of cutting. Each panel features 12-point hobstars atop either fan cutting or crosshatching. The crosshatching is unusual in that it stop at clear, uncut glass – most crosshatching stop at a deep miter. The effect is striking and unusual. The rim of the bowl is finished with fans and the center hobstar is deeply cut with 24 points. The bowl is oval in shape and rolls over on the longer side.
This piece is on an excellent blank and entirely wood wheel polished – like most of Straus’s better work. The piece is quite heavy and measures 10 1/8″ long, 9 1/4″ wide and 3 1/4″ tall. The condition is excellent.
