Vases

This great handled vase was cut and signed by Hawkes. They thought very highly of this piece as they cut it in cranberry cut to clear as well!

Two deep hobstars are stacked on teh side of the pitcher with 8 pointed star sepearting them above and below each one. Croasshatching and tight, deep miters cover the rest of the piece and the base is covered with a 24-point hobstar. The handles of this piece are incredible and covered with 8-point hobstars and crosscuts ending with a fan – Hawkes gave this treatment to some of their top pieces.

The vase is in excellent condition with just some minor roughness around the base and measures.

This vase is signed Hawkes and features an perfect “pie-crust” rim. The pattern features deep hobstars around the rim, fans and clear punties while the entire neck is covered with strawberry-diamond cutting that looks like it’s unfolding like an orange peel around the vase.. The base features a Hawkes style pyramidal star.
The vase is in great condition but the base does have a couple of tiny flakes, the largest of which you can see in the photo of the base. Measures 13 1/2″ tall and 6 1/2″ wide.

This vase was likely cut by J. Hoare – it features a wide variety of motifs they used and a blank they are most commonly known for using.

The vase features very large 8-pointed hobstars framed with parallel line cutting. There are fields of crosscut cane (a J. Hoare motif) towards the middle of the vase. The bulb of the vase features St. Louis diamond cutting and the stem is fluted and notched. The base of the vase contains a 24-point hobstar.

The vase is in great condition and on a super thick, clear blank. It is very heavy and measures 14″ tall and 4 3/4″ wide.

I have never seen this form or design before. It looks like it could have been made by J. Hoare, if anyone.

Flat hobstar clusters adorn the front of the piece which are divided by fans of varying depth. The sides of the vase feature an oblong vesica of clear-button cane flanked on either side by notching leading to lower flat hobstars. Framing this motif are chains of fanned stars meeting at the top of the vase in giant crosshatched fields. The base of this piece is finished with a scalloped, 32-point hobstar.

The vase is in perfect condition and measures an impressively large 12 1/2″ tall and and 7″ wide. This unusual piece is unlike any I’ve ever seen.

This is a particularly elegant vase with Gorham mounts. While the maker is unknown it is similar to some of Sinclaire’s fine engraved work.

Fine stretch across this piece leading up to a rolled rim, sterling top with more foliage. The blend of engraving and form is sublime and well thought out.

The piece is in excellent condition and measures 16 1/2″ tall and 7 1/4″ wide at the silver top.

This was one of the nicer pieces done by Fry in their Venetia design. This vase is signed and on an exceptionally clear blank.

The design lays out particularly well on this shape – a vesica with a deep hobstar and fans on either side displays on the front of the tazza. The vesica is framed by a crescent of split notched bands held together by a flat hobstar. In between each of the crescents are two stacked hobstars, crosshatching in fans. The neck of the piece is done in deeply cut honeycomb all the way down to the base – it’s unfathomable how they got the wheel in there towards the bottom. The base of the piece is scalloped and finished with a 24- point hobstar.

I love the form of this piece and it measures 8 1/2″ tall and 5 1/2″ wide. It’s in perfect condition.

This blank, used specifically by Libbey, is cut in their Harvard design. This shape is so unsuual with an extra heavy base for absolutely no-toppling The exact piece is shown in the Libbey compendium catalog reproduced by the ACGA.

The Harvard pattern has two main diamond-shaped fields that feature two different motifs. One is cut with crosshatching surrounded by clear panels on all sides, while the other features strawberry-diamond cutting. There are also large fields of a diamond fan and both the top and bottom have fun cutting. The base is cut in pattern with an unusual star formation featured on Libbey’s Harvard.

This piece in in perfect condition and measures 11 1/4″ and 7″ wide! The blank is stunningly clear as should be expected of early Libbey glass.

This ovoid vase was made by Hoare in an engraved Wild Rose design. It is signed very faintly on the base.

The quality of engraving on this vase is top notch with tons of detail – so many layers of rose petals are shown with great effort. It always amazing me on a piece like this the layer of depth and polish used to accomplish shading. Examine the leaves and petals closely. The form of the oval vase provides a perfect canvas for the talented engraver. The sides of the vase are done in curling, frosted engraved figures.

The vase is in excellent condition with just a tiny fleck to the rayed base. It measures 10″ high and 5″ wide.

This piece was most likely cut by Hawkes. It is unsigned but extremely similar to the Brunswick and Marquise patterns and on a blank I’ve seen cut by Hawkes as well.

The design on this cup features a chain of hobstars around the top portion with fans between each. Trickling down from those are notching and zipper cutting. In between a set of four vertical cuts, are a deep, clear scallop. The base tapers in and features fluted and notched cutting. The handles, which are perfectly annealed are double notched. Please not the dramatic flair of the top – it’s really a stunning shape. The base is finished in a rayed star.

The cup is in perfect conditions with no flaws that I can find. The blank is wonderfully clear and brilliant and measures 8″ wide (handle to handle) and 6 3/4″ tall.

This vase is cut by J. Hoare. The exact piece is shown in the back of the black catalog reprint. While it’s called “Regular,” I believe this is a title Hoare used for one off designs, like the one on this vase.

The rim of the vase features a combination of deep hobstars, flat hobstars and crosshatched, triangular fields. Draping down most of the vase is a vine of primrose. In between each panel of the engraving are large parallel line herringbone cutting. The lower bout of the vase looks to be cut in Hoare’s Champion pattern. The base is finished with an unusual hobstar formation

The vase is in good condition – the bottom has one small chip on the edge and some surface scratching. It’s 17 1/2″ tall and 5 1/4″ across the base. The combination of cutting, engraving and size make this vase a highly desirable specimen. Large vases like this are becoming harder to find.

Most baskets of the Brilliant Period are much later and on thin blanks with shallow cutting. This basket is just opposite – it’s quite heavy and thick with an extremely thick handle – it stands out from most others in both shape and presence.

The pattern on this piece is quite unusual. Bands of hobnail create the major outline and meet at fields of crosshatching. They frame large, deep hobstars which run down to the base of the basket. The edge of the piece has an unusual fan motif featuring almost cornucopia of fan cutting. The very thick handle is double notched with a crosscut “X” in between each notch. Even the base of the basket is finished with a large 28-point hobstar.

The basket is in very good condition with some minor roughness at the edge. It’s impressive size measures just under 12″ tall and 9″ wide.

This is an incredible chalice vase in an unknown pattern. The pattern is shown in Pearson’s Encyclopedia, Volume 1 but is unidentified. It was clearly designed by a master.

The main motif of this vase features a deep circular miter surrounding an unusual formation. The formation is made up of eight clear button hobstars surrounding a punty embedded in crosshatching. The crosshatching is unique in that it is not polished fully (like some of the earlier Hawkes and Libbey patterns). Dividing each of the circles is split feathered type of cutting topped with three leaves. Underneath the upper portion of the vase is a chain of cane connected by additional clear button hobstars. The neck of the vase is finished with a compressed hollow diamond cutting in addition to the lower portion being fluted and notched. There is also a highly desirable lapidary knob. The base is serrated and covered with a 24-point hobstar.

This vase is in excellent condition with only a few small flakes to the cutting. It measures 11 1/2″ tall and 5 1/2″ wide. It’s my opinion that this magnificent vase was likely cut by Clark.
