Stemware

This extra heavy champagne was cut in Dorflinger’s Holland pattern. This was Dorflinger’s most expensive pattern and subsequently, one of their rarest. It’s also one of the few patterns by Dorflinger with clear-tusk cutting.

Four large hobstars are framed by clear tusk cutting around the bowl of this stem. Each of these hobstars is divided by a smaller hobstar with notching coming to a point. The stem is extremely impressive with a air-trap knob that is cut in hob-diamond. The base of the champagne is cut with a hobstar and scalloped around the edge on a thick blank.

Stems like this seldom come to market. This one is in perfect condition.

While Hawkes’ Queens design might not be difficult to find on a vase or pitcher, it’s extremely difficult to find on stemware like these pieces. Offered are 3 sizes – red wine, white wine, and a tiny cordial. All pieces are signed with either the Hawkes trefoil or the word Hawkes.

The pattern displays itself beautifully on these items – 2 stacked hobstars are divided on both sides by clear punty cutting which provides a beautiful optical effect.  The stems are fluted and notched in a particularly unusual way – the notches increase in size and depth towards the bowl of the stem.

The cordials, which are the hardest of the pack to get are 3 1/2″ tall and 1 1/2″ wide. They are $250 each and I have 3.

The white wines are 4 1/4″ tall, 2″ wide and are $150 each. I have 7

The red wines wines are 4 1/2″ tall, 2″ wide and $175 each. I have 3

These extremely unusual stems were cut in a variation of the Persian design in amber cut to clear. These may have been cut by L. Straus as this stem type was done by them along with some cut to clear stemware along with this type of hobstar base. While there appears to be some blue/green in the photo, it’s only a reflection – these are a yellowish/gold/amber.

The Persian design extends on the lower bout of the bowl of the flut. A lapidary knob sits below that along with a flutted and notched, air-trap stem. The bases are covered in a clear center hobstar.

The stems are in perfect condition and measure 6 3/4″ tall and 2 3/4″ wide.  Price is $800 for the pair or $425 each.

I have 1 of these very well done cranberry cut to clear wine glasses in the Russian pattern left. Russian was cut by many different companies prior to the patent process, but these were likely cut by Dorflinger, Hawkes, or J. Hoare.

The Russian pattern expands across the bowl of this stem – with so many miters the contrast between clear and the cranberry casing is stunning. The stem of the wine is fluted and notched and the base is finished with a 26-point rayed star.

The stems are in perfect condition and measure just over 4 1/2″ tall and and just over 2 1/2″ wide. Price is per stem.

These are some of the best stems from the Brilliant Period. While I’ve seen them a few times, the maker remains unknown. They are shown in only retail catalogs, like Marshall Fields, so we still don’t know who cut them – but these are some of the finest examples of the era.

A large deep hobstar sits above a curved band of cane along the bowl of the stem. It is framed on the upper portion with notched cutting which leads into a vesica of two flat hobstars with crosshatched dividers. The stem includes a fluted lower portion and lapidary knob framing a large, hollow teardrop. The base of these goblets are incredible – with a 6-sided hobstar formation with caned-points and fine crosshatching cut all the way up to the scalloped edge. The base alone is indicative of the quality of this set.

The goblets are in perfect condition and measure 6 1/2″ tall and 3 1/4″ wide. I have 12 and they are priced at $375 each.

These gorgeous stems were cut by Hawkes in clear flutes. They feature a thick layer of clear glass on the exterior and another layer of solid emerald green glass on the interior of the bowl. All the stems are signed Hawkes – interestingly, each one is a slightly different shade of green.

Deep scalloped flutes run all along this piece – from the bowl down to the base. The base features a rayed star. The thickness of the glass really provides an unusual effect, since most cased glass, you can’t distinctly see the layers like these pieces.

The aperitifs are in perfect condition and measure 7″ tall and 2 3/4″ wide. There are 5, price is per stem.

These gorgeous stems are cut in Libbey’s Old Harvard design. They are very heavy, deeply cut and wood wheel polished to satiny perfection.

One diamond-shaped field of strawberry diamond cutting sits adjacent to another field with cross hatching framed by deep miters. Fans sit between each diamond and a deep pyramidal fanned star sit beneath those. The stem of the piece has a tear drop, that is fluted and has a lapidary knob while the base has a rayed star.

The colors are a gorgeous deep cranberry and emerald green. I have 2 of the green and 1 of the cranberry.  They measure 5″ tall and 3″ wide. Price is for each.

This jug was engraved by Sinclaire and features a particularly unusual handle. The piece is signed with the Sinclaire logo.

The unusual piece features a ribbed exterior with flowers, stems and leaves copper wheel engraved and polished. Sinclaire went the extra mile with this unusual block handle and engraved it also. The matching cordial has the same ribbed exterior with engraving and a ribbed base with the same pattern!

These wines, cut in Strawberry Diamond and fan are exceptional. Each stem is cased in deep cranberry glass and cut back to the clear portion. While most stems like this have clear bottoms, the glass maker went the extra mile and used color to clear bases as well! While many companies cut this design, it’s likely these were done by an earlier company like Dorflinger, Hawkes or even Boston & Sandwich. It’s difficult to accurately capture colored glass by camera, but these stems are the deep cranberry typically associated with American cut glass.

The Strawberry Diamond pattern consists of a crosscutting of deeper and shallower miters. The deeper ones frame a section of four diamonds. These diamonds shimmer and really pop with the cut-to-clear effect. The stems are fluted and the bases rayed.

It’s estimated that only 1-5% of American Brilliant Cut Glass was done in color. I can also estimate that stems with colored bottoms probably make up 5% of the colored stem market. So these stems are a true rarity. The deep cranberry color is stunning and will make your cabinets pop. I have 8 of these stems and will offer quantity discounts. Price is per stem.

These gorgeous stems are cut in a deep cranberry cut to clear color. The pattern cut be that of a few companies, but Dorflinger and Boston & Sandwich seem likely.

Hobnail cutting adorns the lower portion of each bowl of the stem. Then there is a band of tiny, clear punties closer to the rim. The stems are fluted and the bases feature a 24-point rayed star.

Both stems are in excellent condition and measure 4 3/4″ tall and just under 2 1/2″ wide. The deep cranberry color and cutting both suggest these are an American product – establishing it’s rarity and value instantaneously.

I love these stems cut in Straus’s Imperial pattern – the form is beautiful and must have been quite difficult to acheive.  Cut in their Imperial pattern, Straus adapted the design perfectly to the shape. Please note the remarkable amount of detail just to the stem of the piece.

The Imperial pattern is a design composed of alternating panels of crosshatching and a hobstar with a fanned center. Each field is flanked on the lower portion with notched cutting while the fans flank the upper portion. The stem of the sherry is made up of three portions of glass which are each cut with multiple facets. The center knob and juxtaposition of all the components really stands out. The base is finished with a 12-point, clear-buttoned hobstar. It’s also worth noting that the mouth of the goblet flairs.

The stems are in perfect condition with the original rim. They are wood-wheel polished to perfection and measure 4 1/2″ tall and just over 2 1/8″″ across the base. I have 7 stems. Price is $45 each with quantity discounts available!

These beautiful stems are cut in one of the nicest renditions of a triple-miter pattern I’ve seen. The cutting is exceptionally deep, especially for a stem and the glass quality is top-notch.

The triple miter design featured on these stems features three deep miters. The relief those miters make leaves large knobs which are covered in crosshatching. The precision it took to cut these is unfathomable. You can literally lie a portion of your finger in the channels created. The stems feature a lapidary knob with a long teardrop. The bases are covered with a very unusual hobstar which centers around an 8-pointed star with a clear button center.

The glasses are in perfect condition with their original, fire-polished rims. They measure 4 3/4″ tall, 3 7/8″ wide and can be purchased as a group for $250 or $75 each. There are four total.
