Rarities

This extra heavy champagne was cut in Dorflinger’s Holland pattern. This was Dorflinger’s most expensive pattern and subsequently, one of their rarest. It’s also one of the few patterns by Dorflinger with clear-tusk cutting.

Four large hobstars are framed by clear tusk cutting around the bowl of this stem. Each of these hobstars is divided by a smaller hobstar with notching coming to a point. The stem is extremely impressive with a air-trap knob that is cut in hob-diamond. The base of the champagne is cut with a hobstar and scalloped around the edge on a thick blank.

Stems like this seldom come to market. This one is in perfect condition.

This incredible punch set was cut by Maple City Cut Glass at the turn of the century. Temple was their best design and this piece shows extremely quality throughout.

The punch bowl is ‘cut-to-pieces’ on every inch, featuring a rich hobstar pattern with deep miters that nearly pierce through the bowl. The edge is treated with a paired tooth motif that can be seen in other Maple City designs. Even rarer is to find this set with matching cups AND a ladle.

This top quality piece measures 14″ wide and 14″ tall. It’s in perfect condition and on the finest, clear blanks.

While Hawkes’ Queens design might not be difficult to find on a vase or pitcher, it’s extremely difficult to find on stemware like these pieces. Offered are 3 sizes – red wine, white wine, and a tiny cordial. All pieces are signed with either the Hawkes trefoil or the word Hawkes.

The pattern displays itself beautifully on these items – 2 stacked hobstars are divided on both sides by clear punty cutting which provides a beautiful optical effect.  The stems are fluted and notched in a particularly unusual way – the notches increase in size and depth towards the bowl of the stem.

The cordials, which are the hardest of the pack to get are 3 1/2″ tall and 1 1/2″ wide. They are $250 each and I have 3.

The white wines are 4 1/4″ tall, 2″ wide and are $150 each. I have 7

The red wines wines are 4 1/2″ tall, 2″ wide and $175 each. I have 3

Isabella is one of Libbey’s rarest and most desirable designs. It was cut in the early part of the period and features very deep, wood-wheel polished cutting associated with some of Libbey’s greatest work.

A cross of hobnail meets in the cente rof the plate at a flat hobstar. Extremely deep miters frame this work and lead into another unusual cross featuring a clear-button hobstar. This hobstar actually has two layers of miters, which creates almost one hobstar layed atop the other, to the side – Isabella is the only design I know of that has that. The hobstar has four sides with crosshatching and clear areas creating a triangle.

The plate is in perfect condition and on the clearest blank. The cutting is staggeringly deep and the plate is a great size and display of the pattern. It measures 7″ wide and 1 1/2″ tall.

Here’s a set that won’t come up often, if ever. It’s a punch set in Hawkes North Star design. The set features a full punch bowl, stand and 4 matching cups. All pieces are signed with the Hawkes trademarks.

The North Star pattern features 4 huge hobstars with rayed star centers – something you rarely see combined. Each of these giant stars, is divided by bursting star motifs above and below it. The center star on the knob of the punch bowl features the same rayed center hobstar that is used throughout the pattern. The collar of the punch bowl is cut with clear button center hobstars in a chain. The punch cups are footed and mimic the punch bowls.

The punch bowl measures 12″ wide, and 10 1/4″ tall. The cups are 3 1/4″ tall and 2 3/4″ wide and all are in perfect condition.

This extremely unusual basket, which rolls over, was cut by J. Hoare in their Marquise pattern. The quality of this pattern varies from piece to piece, but this example is of the highest quality – with a shine and clarity unlike most.

The center of the basket features an unusual hobstar formation – surrounded on all sides by diamond-shaped fields of crosshatching. The crosshatching fields to a split-feather type of cutting which is then framed with an unusual crosscut band that you can find on some of Hoare’s more unusual designs. Layered above that are flat hobstars and hobnailed fields. The rim of the basket features deeper hobstars with crosshatching sitting atop a band of cane cutting. The amount of cutting and motifs on the bowl is staggering! The handle is perfectly annealed and triple notched.

The basket is in stunning, perfect condition. It measures 10″ long and 8″ wide.

These paperweights are true rarities in the world of cut glass smalls. The one on the left was made by Meriden and Wilcox silver – it is shown in the Meriden catalog. The one on the right is Gorham silver but unknown on the glass maker.

The Meriden paperweight is quite heavy and features notching around the perimeter with a 20-point hobstar on the base. The Gorham one is cut with a 22-point hobsstar – the silver is quite elaborate and monogramed.

The Meriden paperweight measures 3 1/2″ wide and 2 1/4″ tall. It is in good condition with a few fleabites in the notching that are difficult to find or see. The Gorham one is 3″ wide and 1 1/2″ tall. It has a small clambshell nick on the base which can be see in the photo. They are $175 each.

This rare 1-1 pattern adapts itself so well to this hexagonal bowl – showing off Sinclaire’s best cutting and engraving. It’s signed in the center with the Sinclaire trademark.

A border of holly follows the edge of the piece. The central portion of this bowl, which almost folds inward, is covered in “snowflake” cutting – tiny, rich hobstars with clear panels floating in between them with a little unpolished, rayed star in the center. The overall effect is nothing short of stunning!

The bowl is in perfect condition on a clear blank. It measures 9″ from side to side, 10 1/2″ from corner to corner and 3 1/2″ tall.

These gorgeous stems are cut in Libbey’s Old Harvard design. They are very heavy, deeply cut and wood wheel polished to satiny perfection.

One diamond-shaped field of strawberry diamond cutting sits adjacent to another field with cross hatching framed by deep miters. Fans sit between each diamond and a deep pyramidal fanned star sit beneath those. The stem of the piece has a tear drop, that is fluted and has a lapidary knob while the base has a rayed star.

The colors are a gorgeous deep cranberry and emerald green. I have 2 of the green and 1 of the cranberry.  They measure 5″ tall and 3″ wide. Price is for each.

This is one of the rarest shapes of Alhambra that exists – this ice tub is really a stunning example of one of the most desirable patterns of the Brilliant Period. An Alhambra collector assures me he  has has only seen a handful over the years and values them very highly.

The rim of this piece features the pattern’s signature castle rim followed by a chain of cut and unpolished Greek key. The rest of the Alhambra pattern is composed of chains of hobstars and bands of cane. Even the tab handles have hte castle rim and clear button hobstars cut into the handles.

The ice tub is in perfect condition and measures 6 1/2″ wide and 4″ tall. This is one of the most iconic patterns of the period and this is an extremely unusual find.

This is a tremendous punch bowl cut in Sinclaire’s Olympian design. It’s signed with a huge Sinclaire trademark in the center of the bowl. I have only seen one other example of this design in person, on a small plate.  This is one of Sinclaire’s rarest and most expensive designs to produce.

This very complex pattern is made up of several draping, stacked chains of hobstars. They are each decided by notching.. This effect is achieved dramatically because of the great, globe-shaped blank. Hobstars and crosshatching make up the rest of the design and repeat in a more condensed form on the base. The neck of the base is cut with stair cutting and a chain of clear-button hobstars and crosshatched fields.

The punch bowl is in perfect condition on a perfectly clear blank. It measures 15″ tall and 15″ wide.

This wonderful bowl was cut by Bergen in their Cornucopia (Plymouth)Pattern. This hard to find design is stunning and required a ton of work – look at all the extra miters at the edge and center of the bowl on the sprigs.

This early design is one of Bergen’s best. The center hobstar has crosshatched filled points while the outer ones are framed with crosshatching – I can’t help but believe this took a lot of care to et right. The cornucopias swirl around each hobstar and feature a crosshatched band holding it all together.

The bowl is a large 9″ wide and 4″ tall. It’s in perfect condition and on a perfectly clear blank. I seldom come across this design and this one shouldn’t be missed.
