Plates

I have only ever seen this pattern one other time, on a low bowl, about 5 years ago. And while it’s not pictured anywhere that I know of, I still find it particularly memorable. The design and rim treatment is so particularly singular and mesmerizing.

The edge of this plate is finished with hobnail and the rim is coined and beveled on both sides. Note the large hobstars – they have five-mitered points which can only be found on very high quality designs. Dividing each large hobstar is hobnail, fanned fields, and a flat hobstar perched atop two crosshatched bars. The center of this plate is finished with another deeply cut hobstar.

The plate is in good condition with some minor roughness at the rim and some surface scratches at the center. The blank is perfectly clear and brilliant. It measures 6 1/2″ wide and tall.

This platter is cut in Libbey’s own variation of the Ellsmere pattern – it is signed with the Libbey Sabre in the center. The blank is exceptionally clear which is evedent when looking at the deep miters around the edge. This piece is cut on the traditional Libbey 12″ plate blank and is pie shaped with the rise.

A hobstar lies in the center of this piece and is surrounded on all sides by six bursting fans. Lying further from the center are 6 large hobstars as well. The edge of the tray is absolutely stunning. The traditional border of the Ellsmere pattern is present with notched prism and crosshatching divided by deep miters. This cutting is divided six times around the edge by thick bands of triple-miter cane. It’s an incredible rim treatment which is unique to just this pattern.

The tray is in excellent condition – I only find 3 extremely small fleabites around the rim. The blank is spectacular and the edge just comes to life on the vibrant crystal. The plate measures 11 7/8″ in diamter and 1 7/8″ tall.

This wonderful 12″ tray is cut in Hawkes’ highly collectible Devonshire pattern. The blank on this piece exceptionally thick and heavy – I’m guessing it is an older piece and it is unsigned.

The Devonshire continually expands with a variety of contrasting motifs. At the core of the tray is 12 split-point hobstar. Following this hobstar are kite-shaped fields of cross hatching. Either side of the crosshatching is flanked by crystal clear uncut areas. The second to last portion of the devonshire includes large diamond-shaped fields of strawberry diamond cutting. Finally, mirror-like fans top off the pattern as they make their way up to the serrated edge.

It is crucial to understand the quality of blank this piece is on – the finest, heaviest, and most brilliant one I’ve ever seen a piece of Devonshire on. It measures exactly 12″ wide and 1 3/8″ tall. The tray is in nearly perfect condition with only some very minor pattern roughness.

This is a particularly unusual plate. I think it was made by J. Hoare since the center hobstar is similar to much of their work.

the center hobstar is cut with crosshatched tips and fans between each point. The amound of work in that one tiny hobstar is incredible. Large fields of cane and and unknown cutting make up a majority of the pattern. The unknown cutting is like strawberry diamond except that the miters are actually larger, clear channels and the diamonds are actually fanned fully. The rest of the pattern is made up of crosshatching and fan.

The plate measures 6 1/4″ and 1″ tall. It’s in great condition with just some minor fleabites around the rim.

This is a wonderful rectangular tray which is signed Hawkes. It’s also cut with Hawkes U-notches on the rim. The funny thing about the piece is it’s clearly in Elmira’s No. 17 pattern as it’s clearly picture in the catalog. I have seen two more of these trays also signed Hawkes – it appears one company was contracting out the other for this piece.

The center of this tray consists of a very unusual six-point star formation made up of cane, crosshatching, and fans. Each one of the points of this formations is almost rounded out with vesicas of crosshatching. Falling in between each point of the 6-point star are large, richly cut hobstars.

This beautiful piece in perfect condition with the exception of one tiny sliver chip in the recession of the teeth – otherwise it’s pristine. It measures 14 1/4″ wide, 8″ wide, and 2″ tall.

This is a really nice 7″ plate in Libbey’s Kimberly pattern. Most of Kimberly is unsigned due to the fact that it was made prior to the advent of signatures on cut glass. Consequently, the plate is wood-wheel polished like much of Libbey’s fine early work.

The main component of the Kimberly pattern is a large 6-pointed star formation. This formation is made up of crosshatching surrounded by double miters. Deeply cut hobstars sit between the points of the 6-pointed star. Small bits of fan adorn the hobstars.

The plate is in perfect condition with hardly a scratch on it. It measures 7″ wide and 1 3/8″ tall. The blank is consistent with that of other pieces of Kimberly – perfectly clear and bright.

It does not get any rarer than this unsurpassed game plate by Sinclaire. Sinclaire made two forms of game plates-a set in birds, and a set in fish. There is only one place I know of that the plates can be seen and that is p. 94 in Rarities. The exact piece is shown on page 95 and is called “King Plower” however this is a misinterpretation because mine says “Ring Plover” on it. This might be the only one of these plates outside of the set shown in rarities! The plate is signed with the word “SINCLAIRE” on the top edge of the plate.

The plate exhibits the finest engraving done by any brilliant period glass house. The scene features the bird spreading its wings ready to take flight. The Plover is standing among some grass and taller brush. The engraving is so masterful you can see every piece feather and every blade of grass clearly. The words “Ring Plover are placed at about 7 o’clock on the plate. The border is done with leaves, branches, and acorns.

The plate is absolutely perfect in condition with the exception of some very minor scratches. The plate measures 9 ¼” wide and is just under 1” tall. A true rarity in ABP glass-few collections have one piece with engraving this fine.
