Plates

Isabella is one of Libbey’s rarest and most desirable designs. It was cut in the early part of the period and features very deep, wood-wheel polished cutting associated with some of Libbey’s greatest work.

A cross of hobnail meets in the cente rof the plate at a flat hobstar. Extremely deep miters frame this work and lead into another unusual cross featuring a clear-button hobstar. This hobstar actually has two layers of miters, which creates almost one hobstar layed atop the other, to the side – Isabella is the only design I know of that has that. The hobstar has four sides with crosshatching and clear areas creating a triangle.

The plate is in perfect condition and on the clearest blank. The cutting is staggeringly deep and the plate is a great size and display of the pattern. It measures 7″ wide and 1 1/2″ tall.

This plate appears to be in a combination of Hawkes’ Nautilus and Albion designs – which creates a stunning visual effect and high quality cutting. It’s signed the in center with the Hawkes trefoil trademark.

Four crossed vesicas of cane converge in teh center of the plate with fanned-diamond fileds in the center of the plate – not at all unlike the Nautilus pattern. Sitting between each of these vesicas is a fan of notched cutting or a heavy, deep hobstar. The edges of the plate feature another deeply cut, rich hobstar.

The plate is on a great, clear blank and measures 7 1/4″ wide and 1″ tall. It’s in perfect condition with no flaws.

This beautiful piece is cut in Sinclaire’s always popular Star & Pillar design. It is signed in the center with the Sincliare trademark.

Twelve deeply cut hobstars run around the perimeter of the plate. Stemming down from each are deeply cut miters which frame deep, clear tusks. The miters run to the points of the hobstar or right between the points. A deeply cut hobstar sits perfectly symmetrical in the center.

The plate is in perfect condition and measures 7 1/4″ wide and 1″ tall. It’s on a perfectly clear blank which shows off the clear tusk cutting.

This huge platter was cut by American Cut Glass Company and designed by William C. Anderson. It is done in their Universe design and can be seen prominently in ‘The Chain of Evidence’ published by the Anderson Study Group.

Clusters of clear-button hobstars adorn the tray, each topped with a flat Christmas style star. Larger, clear-button, wedding-cake hobstars are sitting between the clusters at the edge. I have only ever seen this type of hobstar cut on Libbey’s very rare Windsor pattern. The center tray is finished with a 5-pointed star made up of points of cane. Between the points, there is a feathering motif.

The tray is in perfect condition and measures 13 3/4″ wide and 1 3/4″ tall. The quality of glass and cutting is unparalleled – it’s one of the best larger trays and can stand up against trays twice as expensive.

This 7″ plate is one of the nicest I’ve ever offered. It’s in an unknown pattern that I have only seen a handful of times – each piece nicer than the next.

The center wedding-cake hobstar on this piece is framed by an unusual double miter 6-sided field. THere are three large vesicas coming off the center that feature rays of cane and 4 grouped, flat hobstars. Surrounding the hobstars is a fan of strawberry diamond cutting – something I always stress is almost always used on pieces of high quality. Three larger wedding-cake styal hobstars adorn the edge of the piece.

The blank on this plate is second to none – exceptionally clear and vibrant. The plate is in excellent condition with two tiny nicks and measures 7″ wide and 3/4″ tall. This is one of the finest plates I’ve offered in some time.

This 7″ plate is cut and signed by Hawkes. It’s in a design I’ve never seen, but features their style from the center to the very edge.

The plate features a central 20-point hobstar. Ten 8-point, clear-button hobstars adorn the edge of the piece each divided by a modified kohinoor-style cane. Crosshatched fields cover the rest of the design right before the central star.

The plate measures 7″ wide and and 1″ tall. It’s in perfect condition. 7″ plates have always been highly collectible as they show off great patterns in a small, collectible size.

This enormous tray was cut in Meriden’s Star design. It was featured prominently in their advertisements – clearly one of the best and most worthwhile pieces the company ever made.

The center of the tray features and 8-pointed star formation made up of crosshatching, cane, and tiny hobstars. This frames an interior hobstar. The exterior of the tray has huge, 32-point hobstars that run up to the edge.

The blank of the tray is fantastic – very heavy and clear and shows off the richly cut work that Meriden is so well known for. It measures 13 3/4″ wide and 1 1/2″ tall. Trays this large and nice seldom come along, and this is marvel to observe.

This is a very detailed 14″ tray by Egginton. The design is similar to their Cambria pattern, but much more detailed with tighter, more skilled cutting. It is signed with the Egginton crescent and star logo.

The center of the platter features a six point star formation. Branching from that are 6 bands of tight cane framed on both sides by beautiful, precise notching. Lying in between each branch is a large hobstar framed with crosshatching, perched atop a tight fan.

The plate is in excellent condition-no damage can be found and the blank is exceptionally clear – as I would expect from Egginton on a piece of this caliber. It measures 14″ wide and 1″ tall. Plates of this size are automatic rarities, but one cut this well only adds to the draw and desirability.

This a great melding of form and design. This dish is cut in Blackmer’s Princess design and it is setup perfectly on this shape.

And 8-pointed star formation takes up the center of this piece – it includes crosshatched triangles surrounding a deeper hobstar. There are vesicas with two stacked hobstars with hobnail in between. The main motif in the pattern are large fans of notching topped with fan cutting. Each lobe of the dish has one of these large fans and it displays perfectly.

The dish is in excellent condtiion with just a few tiny felabites in the cutting. It measures 9” long, 7 3/4” wide, 2 3/4” tall.

Assyrian is easily one of Sinclaire’s most desirable and recognizable geometric designs. This plate combines that rich cut glass with an engraved border. It’s signed in the center.

The checkerboard styling of the Assyrian pattern is eye-catching and intriguing. The detail to get those flat, clear channels is unfathomable and then the weaving of an almost lace-like miter across the entire pattern is stunning. Tiny hobstars stud the entire geometric portion of the piece and the amount of relief acheived leaves a diamond-like sparkle.. The engraved border provides a classy contrast to the plate.

The plate is in perfect condition and measures 10″ in diameter. The blank is wonderfully clear and provides the perfect canvas for this American Brilliant treasure. These sell regularly at auction for $2000 or more in the last year. This is priced to sell.

This is a particularly unusual shape for Alhambra. It’s a sandwich plate with a wafer/short pedestal. The glass is quite thick and heavy towards the center where the blank is about twice as thick. The rim treatment is also unusual for Alhambra, but this is how Meriden cut this blank.

Below the rounded, scallop edge top is a chain of cut and unpolished Greek key. The rest of the Alhambra pattern is composed of chains of hobstars and bands of cane. The underside of the wafer is cut with a notching around the perimeter. The cutting on this plate is considerably precise, tight, and sharp and the glass is beautifully clear.

This piece measures 10″ in diameter and is in perfect condition. Alhambra is one of the most desirable patterns of the Brilliant Period – this shape is one of the rarer forms it was cut in.

This sandwich plate is cut in Jewel’s Aberdeen pattern – easily one of the most striking and popular designs of the Brilliant Period. It combines brilliant cutting with clear glass in a precisely distinguished manner. As most Aberdeen plates go, this has the traditional wafer base.

The center hobstar of this piece lies within the wafer/pedestal. Its points are finished with crosshatching. Following the interior circle is a layer of flute cutting. This meets notching and a band of clear-button hobstars. These hobstars are all separated with crosshatching. Another band of notching divides the final rim flute cutting. One of the most distinguished parts of this pattern is the fact that the flutes become the teeth – surely a cut glass engineering marvel of the time.

The plate is in excellent condition with no damage – just a few surface scratches. It measures an even 10″ wide. A bargain price on one of the most recognizable and desirable designs in cut glass.
