Pieces with Silver

These paperweights are true rarities in the world of cut glass smalls. The one on the left was made by Meriden and Wilcox silver – it is shown in the Meriden catalog. The one on the right is Gorham silver but unknown on the glass maker.

The Meriden paperweight is quite heavy and features notching around the perimeter with a 20-point hobstar on the base. The Gorham one is cut with a 22-point hobsstar – the silver is quite elaborate and monogramed.

The Meriden paperweight measures 3 1/2″ wide and 2 1/4″ tall. It is in good condition with a few fleabites in the notching that are difficult to find or see. The Gorham one is 3″ wide and 1 1/2″ tall. It has a small clambshell nick on the base which can be see in the photo. They are $175 each.

This is a particularly elegant vase with Gorham mounts. While the maker is unknown it is similar to some of Sinclaire’s fine engraved work.

Fine stretch across this piece leading up to a rolled rim, sterling top with more foliage. The blend of engraving and form is sublime and well thought out.

The piece is in excellent condition and measures 16 1/2″ tall and 7 1/4″ wide at the silver top.

This is one of the finest pieces of cut glass, and certainly color, I’ve ever had the opportunity to offer. This oversize tankard, cased cranberry cut to clear, was made by Dorflinger in their ever-desirable No. 99 design. Dorflinger often reserved this pattern for some of their best pieces of color – and this one is no exception. Adding more draw to the piece is an elaborate Tiffany & Co collar.

The color shown is a vibrant, American cranberry and the precision with which the piece is cut is unparalleled.  Bands of deeply cut cane are divided by notching where Dorflinger was still able to leave some of the color on this narrow motif. A chain of hobstars drapes down the sides and front of the pitcher as well – each hobstar center highlighted with a light fan to show off more color. All of the cranberry remains in tact along the base where a richly cut, 24-point hobstar can be found. The handle is cut in the old Dorflinger style of one thick, long band of cane. The Tiffany collar of this piece is extravagant and fit only for a piece of this caliber. Heavy, detailed grape vines extend across the lower edge with a dramatic sweep of the rim as it moves towards the handle. The lip of the pitcher is monogrammed with what appears to be, “MLC.” Possibly a relative of Charles T Cook for whom another similar pitcher was made.
This piece should not be considered without knowing that another important and extremely similar piece sold in 2008 (one of our country’s worst economic times). At a Woody Auction in St. Charles, Missouri, a different shaped pitcher, also cranberry cut to clear by Dorflinger in No. 99 with nearly the same Tiffany collar sold for $49,000. It is now regarded as one of the most valuable pieces of Dorflinger glass.. That pitcher was said to have been made as a presentation piece for the president of Tiffany at the time.
This pitcher measures 14 3/4″ tall, 6 1/2″ across the spout, 5 1/2″ across the base. It weighs 7 pounds and is in mint condition with the exception of one tiny nip in the handle cutting.

I adore this shape that the master craftsmen and Meridn made. The humidor pinches in ever-so-slightly in the center between the Greek Key border and rest of the pattern. The sterling silver lid is marked Wilcox and is monogrammed on the handle.

The Greek Key motif links itself around the top portion of this tobacco holder – making this easily identifiable design completely recognizable. The rest pof the pattern continues down the humidor with chains of hobstar and bands of cane. The base is finished with a rayed star base. Please not how deep the cutting is on the base photo – the miters easily going into the more than half the thickness of the blank.

The humidor is in perfect condition and measures 7 1/4″ and 3 3/4″ wide. The gorgeous combination of silver and cut glass along with one of the most desirable patterns of the period makes this piece highly sought after.

This cute cologne was cut in Hawkes early Brazilian pattern. The entire piece is wood-wheel polished. Additionally, the stopper was crafted by Gorham.

The sides of the cologne feature deeply cut 8-point clear-button hobstars. Crosshatching falls between all of the points. Fans sprout forth from in between each star and reach a diamond topping off the pattern. The base is finished with a deep, rayed star.

The cologne is in great condition and measures . Piece adorned with silver have become highly desirable and will continue to grow in popularity. This is a great cabinet piece and a beautiful combination of silver’s lustre and the glass’s brilliance.

This gorgeous piece was made by J. Hoare – it is pictures in the Gorham archives with a different stopper, but with the glass labeled as Hoare.

The pattern is really nice. There are alternating fields of two main motifs. One motif is clear button cane. The other field features two portions of crosshatching on either side of a flat hobstar. This motif is framed on either side by notching. All of the cutting is separted by gorgeous clear vesicas/tusks. This motif was one of the most difficult to cut in the brilliant period and one that Hoare seemed to master early on. The neck and spout of thep iece are fluted and notched as well as the handle. The base is finished with a perfect rayed star. The silver stopper is monogramed with what I believe is “SMM.” It’s marked Sterling 639.

The decanter is in excellent condition and measures 6 1/2″ wide and 7 7/8″ tall. There is a very light, minor stain to the base of the decanter.

This Dorflinger salad service is absolutely incredible! It may very well be in their Florentine pattern, but it’s quite difficult to tell because of the size and pattern manipulation. The amount of detail in the cutting with all the tiny tusks is stunning! Both pieces are marked Dorflinger on the metal. Each piece has a gorgeous air bubble stretched down the entire piece.

Two tusks surround a vesica of crosshatching on the handles of the set. Perched atop each set of tusks is a clear button 8-pointed hobstar. Fans divide out the rest of the pattern and the ends of each handle are finished with a deeply cut 8 pointed hobstar.

The condition of each piece is excellent with barely a fleabite on either. They measure just under 12″ long and 1 1/2″ tall. Truly a rare set with excellent work by the craftsman at Dorflinger.

I have never seen this pattern before, but it seems like something Meriden may have done as they often used the hexad motif.

This set combines an almost shagbark like engraving with a vesica of hexad cutting. The contrast between the realistic engraving and geometric cutting is extremely tasteful. The bases of the salt and pepper are covered with a rayed star and the caps are marked sterling.

The salt and pepper are in perfect condition and measure 3″ tall and 2″ wide. The glass is perfectly clear without the typical salt stained shaker.

This cologne bottle truely exemplifies what rock crystal can be at its best. Both the stopper and bottle are signed Hawkes and I believe the silver is marked Gorham (photo included)

Since it’s primarily realistic work and there isn’t much technical language for engraving, I will let the pictures do the talking. The copper-wheel engraving is stellar and I particularly like the clear tusk/engraving combination. It makes the piece look like a suspended state of falling water. The St. Louis Diamond only adds to the elegance of this bottle.

The piece is in perfect condition except for a few tiny nicks to the base of the stopper. The cologne measures 7 1/4″ tall by 5″ wide and is quite heavy for it’s size – a very thick blank.
