Engraving

This rare 1-1 pattern adapts itself so well to this hexagonal bowl – showing off Sinclaire’s best cutting and engraving. It’s signed in the center with the Sinclaire trademark.

A border of holly follows the edge of the piece. The central portion of this bowl, which almost folds inward, is covered in “snowflake” cutting – tiny, rich hobstars with clear panels floating in between them with a little unpolished, rayed star in the center. The overall effect is nothing short of stunning!

The bowl is in perfect condition on a clear blank. It measures 9″ from side to side, 10 1/2″ from corner to corner and 3 1/2″ tall.

This ovoid vase was made by Hoare in an engraved Wild Rose design. It is signed very faintly on the base.

The quality of engraving on this vase is top notch with tons of detail – so many layers of rose petals are shown with great effort. It always amazing me on a piece like this the layer of depth and polish used to accomplish shading. Examine the leaves and petals closely. The form of the oval vase provides a perfect canvas for the talented engraver. The sides of the vase are done in curling, frosted engraved figures.

The vase is in excellent condition with just a tiny fleck to the rayed base. It measures 10″ high and 5″ wide.

Assyrian is easily one of Sinclaire’s most desirable and recognizable geometric designs. This plate combines that rich cut glass with an engraved border. It’s signed in the center.

The checkerboard styling of the Assyrian pattern is eye-catching and intriguing. The detail to get those flat, clear channels is unfathomable and then the weaving of an almost lace-like miter across the entire pattern is stunning. Tiny hobstars stud the entire geometric portion of the piece and the amount of relief acheived leaves a diamond-like sparkle.. The engraved border provides a classy contrast to the plate.

The plate is in perfect condition and measures 10″ in diameter. The blank is wonderfully clear and provides the perfect canvas for this American Brilliant treasure. These sell regularly at auction for $2000 or more in the last year. This is priced to sell.

This deeply engraved intaglio set was done in Pairpoint’s Apple pattern. There is one central platter and six individual serving dishes. It is rare to find sets this entirely complete, especially of this quality.

The central tray features two overlapping apples hanging from a branch and surrounded by many leafs and other, smaller apples. The entire border is made up of weaving apples, branches and leaves. The smaller dishes carry the same border and show one apple, gently hanging from a branch. The detail, depth and realistic nature of this intaglio is equal, if not better than many pieces of Tuthill.

Both the tray and the dishes are quite heavy. Each one has a recessed portion and then a lip (where the patter border is displayed). The set is in astonishingly great condition, aside from surface scratching, there is only one chip (can be seen in the first photo on the right) to one of the smaller dishes – all the other pieces are perfect. The platter measures 10 1/2″ wide and 1 1/4″ tall. Each of the serving dishes is 5 1/4″ wide and just under 1″ tall. I’m offering this entire set for a bargain price that you will not likely see any other set of this quality offered for.

Companies often reserved their poppy patterns for the best display of engraving – this bowl is no exception. It is signed, along the edge, with the Hawkes Gravic logo.

The workmanship on this bowl is exceptional. It is a prime example as to why the engravers who made such pieces were paid significantly more than the cutters. Poppy buds and flowers swirl throughout the pattern. The full poppy flower is carved breathtakingly deep – the ridge where the petals of the flower fold over is razor sharp and gives way to the deepest relief possible. It leaves me wondering how they didn’t carve into the interior of the bowl? The rim is finished in a unique way of 4 grouped, large scallops with one even larger in between the next grouping.

Hawkes Gravic work, for whatever reason, is extremely undervalued currently. This stuff is as good, if not better than quite a bit of the Tuthill work out there, yet the prices are extremely reasonable. At one time this was easily a $600 bowl and I’m now offering it for nearly half of that. The bowl measures 9 1/8″ wide and a very deep 4 1/8″ tall.

It does not get any rarer than this unsurpassed game plate by Sinclaire. Sinclaire made two forms of game plates-a set in birds, and a set in fish. There is only one place I know of that the plates can be seen and that is p. 94 in Rarities. The exact piece is shown on page 95 and is called “King Plower” however this is a misinterpretation because mine says “Ring Plover” on it. This might be the only one of these plates outside of the set shown in rarities! The plate is signed with the word “SINCLAIRE” on the top edge of the plate.

The plate exhibits the finest engraving done by any brilliant period glass house. The scene features the bird spreading its wings ready to take flight. The Plover is standing among some grass and taller brush. The engraving is so masterful you can see every piece feather and every blade of grass clearly. The words “Ring Plover are placed at about 7 o’clock on the plate. The border is done with leaves, branches, and acorns.

The plate is absolutely perfect in condition with the exception of some very minor scratches. The plate measures 9 ¼” wide and is just under 1” tall. A true rarity in ABP glass-few collections have one piece with engraving this fine.

This cologne bottle truely exemplifies what rock crystal can be at its best. Both the stopper and bottle are signed Hawkes and I believe the silver is marked Gorham (photo included)

Since it’s primarily realistic work and there isn’t much technical language for engraving, I will let the pictures do the talking. The copper-wheel engraving is stellar and I particularly like the clear tusk/engraving combination. It makes the piece look like a suspended state of falling water. The St. Louis Diamond only adds to the elegance of this bottle.

The piece is in perfect condition except for a few tiny nicks to the base of the stopper. The cologne measures 7 1/4″ tall by 5″ wide and is quite heavy for it’s size – a very thick blank.
