Bowls

I find the Chrysanthemum pattern to be one of the most underrated of the Brilliant Period. A lot of work goes into each piece and the accuracy, depth and polish are unmatched. It’s also aesthetically pleasing and instantly recognizable. This is an older piece and wood wheel polished.

The pattern features four large vesicas. The center porition is made up of a split vesica of crosshatching. It’s framed by cane cutting that converges on a clear center, 8-point hobstar. The star is surrounded on either side by fan cutting. Lying between each large vesica is a deeply cut 22-point hobstar. These hobstars are cut on the curve of the bowl and show extreme depth and precision, seemingly extending further than any other part of the bowl.

The bowl is in great condition with just some minor fleabites and some surface scratching. It measures 9″ wide and 2″ tall. This low bowl displays this particularly lovely pattern quite well. The quality/price ratio can’t be beat.

This heavy bowl is cut in Sinclaire’s seldom seen and well done Brussels pattern. The Brussels pattern is nearly identical to Hawkes’ Kings pattern. Usually the only way to tell the difference is the signature – and this piece is signed in the center with the Sinclaire trademark.

One of the most stunning portions of this pattern are the large, clear punties that wrap around the bowl. They provide wonderful optics when looking at the entire bowl – like a lens. The border of the bowl is also unusual – it is cut like Hawkes’ panel with large scallops and then a u-notch between each one. This rim frames richly cut, diamond shaped hobstars. The punties are divided with a notch and a downward fan. Then there is another additional row of clear-button hobstars and another row of punties. The center of the bowl has a 14- point hobstar.

This bowl is quite heavy and large – measuring 9″ wide and 3 1/2″ tall. The blank is perfectly clear making the optics effect all the more appealing. This piece is in excellent condition with some a couple of extremely minor portions of roughness – no chips, flakes or anything larger than a fleabite.

The Cypress pattern is one of Pitkin & Brooks nicest designs. It combines  on overall swirl/swag with great cutting.

Four offset vesicas splay across the bowl. They are made up of two fanned-center hobstars with cane and crosshatching. And are touched at all ends with fans. Each of these vesicas makes up a border of the central, square hobstar. Perched between each vesicas is a tiny little square of hobstar topped with a huge 24-point hobstar.

The bowl is in excellent condition 8 3/8″ wide and 3 1/4″ tall. The blank is quite clear and the design lays out perfectly on this bowl.

This bowl was cut in Hawkes’ seldom seen Brussels pattern. This exact piece is pictured on page one of the ACGA Hawkes catalog reprint. It’s signed in the center with the Hawkes trademark.

The bowl features a wavy, beveled edge rather than the more traditional teeth. Each crest of the waves houses an 18-point hobstar. The rest of the Brussels pattern features angled miters creating a beautiful patchwork of design. If you like things that are a step away from the ordinary, this bowl should certainly appeal to your cut glass sensibilities.

The bowl is in great condition with only one or two extremely small, light flakes to the edge. It is a very heavy, thick piece and measures 9″ wide and 2″ tall.

This bowl has completely straight, angled sides forming almost a combination between a bowl and a tray. Straus managed to fit the University pattern perfectly on this piece and the edges undulate with the hobstar border of the pattern. It’s quite large and a impressive piece to behold.

The University pattern is made up of a formation of hobstars which comes to eight points. Seven of the hobstars are flat while the central one is deeply cut. The points of the formation are made up of 3 bars of parallel miter cutting. These run between eight deeply cut hobstars. You’ll see the the bowl perfectly mimics these hobstars in shape, providing an impressive and unusual display.
An identical bowl to this one was marked over $1500 at an ACGA convention a couple of years ago. This one is priced significantly less. It’s in wonderful condition with only some small chips in the very corners of the bowl – really hard to find and see. It measures an impressive 10 1/2″ long and over 3″ tall.

Libbey’s Fleur-de-lis pattern is a little known pattern and is quite rare. I can only count 4 pieces I’ve ever seen. I believe this piece to be early and it is not signed. The entire piece is wood-wheel polished with that silky radiant finish. The blank is unusual in that it’s both square and fold-over on all four sides.

The center of the bowl contains an 8-sided hobstar which is enclosed in a 8-point star formation. Alternating between the points are two motifs. One features an upside down 5-pointed star, which is a decidedly Anderson motif. The other motif involves a completely flat field of cane cutting – I have only ever seen this distinct motif on Libbey’s Kite pattern. The rest of the piece is finished in fans.

The bowl is in good condition but has some flaking in the fan cutting. It measures 9″ wide and 3 1/4″ tall. This is a great opportunity to own an extremely rare pattern for a bargain price.

Often times, swirled patterns of the Brilliant Period are referred to as comet cutting/work. It’s often thought that all of these patterns were designed to celebrate the coming of Haley’s comment. I think logic would tell us that the swirling style is just plain attractive. This version of a comet pattern is unknown to me, but the cutting is very similar to works of both Dorflinger and Straus.

Two swirling vesicas alternate with one another around this entire bowl. The first features 4-rayed stars. This exact motif can be seen on another swirled pattern – Straus’s unique. The other vesica involves a cutting I’ve never seen before – two double mitered 6-pointed stars which house another 6-point star are stacked horizontally across the vesica. It’s rare that I come across a type of work I haven’t seen before, but this stands out as complete singular. In between each vesica is a field of crosshatching and notching. The rim of the piece is finished with large fans and the center features a large 24 split point hobstar!

This gorgeous bowl is in great condition with only a few minor flakes to the cutting. It measures 9 3/8″ wide and 4″ tall. The blank is wonderfully clear and the cutting is completely wood wheel polished to perfection.

Tuthill’s Rex pattern is easily one of the most desirable patterns of the period. This slight variation is absolutely incredible. The blank of the bowl is not only extremely thick and heavy, but also a particularly unusual shape. It’s a combination between a round, oblong, AND fold-over bowl. It’s very impressive to say the least.

The central, flower-like connection of 12 vesicas of cane immediately draws your eye into this intense pattern. The pattern seems to continue to bloom forth from this flower. A chain of hobstars, housed by notching, triangular fields and crosshatching, adorn the entire exterior rim of the piece.

This large bowl is in perfect condition save for one area with a horizontal chip to the notched cutting. This very heavy piece measures 10 1/4″ long, 9″ wide, and 3″ wide.

While Egginton is most heavily associated with the Trellis pattern, Hoare also cut a rendition which is featured in their catalog. This bowl, signed Hoare, shows some of their finest and rarest work on a stunning piece of quality glass. With just one glance at this piece, it becomes apparent why this is one of the most desirable patterns of the Brilliant Period.

The Trellis pattern is glorious in it’s optical effect – clear channels of glass appear to weave over and under on another making a lattice work that is second to none. Hobstars lie between each “block” of clear channel work. The precisions and depth of cutting is particularly impressive with knobs being made with each hobstar. This rendition of Trellis is extremely sharp!

The bowl measures 8 1/4″ wide and 3 1/4″ tall. The blank is stunning and highlights the deep, clear channels throughout the piece. The bowl is in perfect condition save for one tiny flake in the cutting.

Companies often reserved their poppy patterns for the best display of engraving – this bowl is no exception. It is signed, along the edge, with the Hawkes Gravic logo.

The workmanship on this bowl is exceptional. It is a prime example as to why the engravers who made such pieces were paid significantly more than the cutters. Poppy buds and flowers swirl throughout the pattern. The full poppy flower is carved breathtakingly deep – the ridge where the petals of the flower fold over is razor sharp and gives way to the deepest relief possible. It leaves me wondering how they didn’t carve into the interior of the bowl? The rim is finished in a unique way of 4 grouped, large scallops with one even larger in between the next grouping.

Hawkes Gravic work, for whatever reason, is extremely undervalued currently. This stuff is as good, if not better than quite a bit of the Tuthill work out there, yet the prices are extremely reasonable. At one time this was easily a $600 bowl and I’m now offering it for nearly half of that. The bowl measures 9 1/8″ wide and a very deep 4 1/8″ tall.

This piece is somewhat a departure from a lot of typical Hawkes work. The first thing one will notice is the unusual, almost football shape of the bowl. This blank, which curves in on all sides, is unfamiliar to me. It seems to combine a good bit of their other, known patterns and then add some more seldom-seen motifs. The piece is signed in the center with the Hawkes trefoil.

The pattern of the bowl borrows heavily from several patterns – immediately Brazilian and Dorothea come to mind. Two conjoined 8-point hobstars circle the perimeter while being divided by fans. The two hobstars are framed by elongated points of parallel, feather-like cutting. In between each of these points are clear panels and yet another 8-point star. I find the center of the bowl quite fascinating. It features a cluster of tiny hobstars (something that I don’t recall in any Hawkes patterns). This cluster formation, containing 8-hobstars, is not something I ever recall seeing in any of the cut glass patterns.

The bowl is in great condition with 3 very minor chips on the rim – no shape is lost. It measures 10″ long, 7 3/4″ wide, and 3 3/8″ tall. This unique piece is on a wonderfully clear blank.

This bowl or tray, in Libbey’s Princess pattern, is a particularly unusual blank by the Libbey glass company. This is an early piece, with wood-wheel polish and is therefore, not signed.

The Princess pattern is an exercise in classic cut glass design.  Two main panels alternate with one another and are separated by fan cutting. The first panel is made up of three sections of crosshatching and one section of an unusual and very Libbey crosscut. The other type of panel is made up of strawberry-diamond cutting. Under each of these fields is either deep miters or additional crosshathcing. The center of the piece is finished off with a beautiful 16-point hobstar.

This bowl is quite heavy and measures 10 1/8″ at the widest and 2″ tall. It’s in perfect condition save for a few fleabites in the pattern. This is a great opportunity to own a large piece, in a known pattern, for a meager price!
