Bowls

This wonderful bowl was cut by Bergen in their Cornucopia (Plymouth)Pattern. This hard to find design is stunning and required a ton of work – look at all the extra miters at the edge and center of the bowl on the sprigs.

This early design is one of Bergen’s best. The center hobstar has crosshatched filled points while the outer ones are framed with crosshatching – I can’t help but believe this took a lot of care to et right. The cornucopias swirl around each hobstar and feature a crosshatched band holding it all together.

The bowl is a large 9″ wide and 4″ tall. It’s in perfect condition and on a perfectly clear blank. I seldom come across this design and this one shouldn’t be missed.

This is a beautiful piece of glass cut by Libbey in their Imperial design. It is signed with the Libbey sabre trademark.

I believe this blank to be solely used by Libbey/Anderson – it’s unusual in that while it folds over on all sides, it does so at a slight angle so it’s not symmetrical. The Imperial pattern adapts perfectly to the form. Two large fields make up most of the pattern – one involves a very complicated hexad cutting with mitered buttons while the other is more of a triple miter framed hobstar. These are bordered by undulating bands of cane which converge at fanned diamonds. The center of the bowl is finished with an eight-pointed hobstar formation with crosshatched points.

The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 8″ wide and 2 3/4″ tall.

This is an extra thick bowl cut and signed by Hawkes. While this pattern shows as a numbered design in one piece of reference material, it’s believed that’s an error by the authors. I believe it remains unidentified.

A deeply cut hobstar sits central in an octagonal field. It’s surrounded on all sides by 8 pointed stars which provide the framework for larger, deeply cut hobstars on four portions of hte piece. The smaller “pockets” havea  clear puntie and another deep hobstar with fans.

Blowout bowls like this one were a specialty of Hawkes and they did an exceptional job on this one. It’s quite large, measuring 10 1/2″ wide and 3 1/4″ tall.

This is a very large bowl done in Fry’s Rochester design. It’s on a very clear, brilliant blank.

The main portion of the design features crossed bars of triple-miter cane. They intersect at a clearn button hobstar and are divided by fan cutting. Vesicase of very tight hobnail are between each of the cane stars and are surrounded by notching

The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 10″ wide and 4 1/2″ tall.

This rare, early design was done by Hoare. It’s likely this was a Hoare blank – I have only ever seen them cut it.

Cane provides the main framework for the pattern – housing hobstars topped with fields of fan cutting. Smaller hobstars connect the rest of the pattern together at the base of the cane. One of the main draws of the pattern is the vesica featuring a clear tusk (one of the most difficult motifs to cut) which look like gorgeous, clear icicles placed within the busy pattern. These tusks extend and pierce the center of the bowl. Rich, sharp hobstars sit between each point of the pattern at the edge.

The piece is in perfect condition and measures 9″ wide and a deep 5 1/2″ tall.

This low bowl was cut in a pattern very similar to Meriden’s Byzantine. The effect and motifs are akin to each other and the overall look of the piece is really eye catching.

Two main components weave around the rim of the bowl – the first is the most identifiable – a long band of crosshatching with clear punties adorning it drapes across the bowl. These cross points of cane, hobnail and a flat hobstar. The center of the bowl features a 6-point hobstar star formation with cane in the points and  3 deeply cut hobstars.

The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 8″ wide and 2″ tall.

This orange bowl is a design very similar to Sinclaire’s Assyrian but is actually in the Ribbon design by Niagara cut glass. It features clear channel cutting moving between hobstars. The rim is finished in an unusual squared off way and the center features a deep hobstar.

The Orange bowl is in great shape with high sides on both ends. It measures 7 1/2″ long, 4 1/2″ tall and 5″ wide.

This gigantic bowl was cut by Straus in their highly-skilled Ducal design. Clear tusks, one of the most difficult motifs to cut, are displayed prominently all over the bowl. The crimped shape, in addition to the size, adds to the rarity.

This bowl features three large wedding-cake hobstars on flaried out portions. Separating each hobstar are vesicas which pair three, clear tusks surrounded by notched prism. The two tusks are connected by two 8-point stars embraced on either end with fans. Clear tusks were one of the hardest motifs of the Brilliant Period to achieve-requiring the naked eye of the cutter to achieve their perfect, icicle-like roundness.  It’s also very neat how the Ducal pattern doesn’t center around a hobstar, but rather converges in the center.

The bowl is a full 13″ wide and 4 1/2″ tall. It’s in perfect condition and wood-wheel polished to a silky brilliance.

This is a seldom-seen pattern. Signed by Libbey, this bowl shows off some unusual design elements – actually similar to Anderson’s Fredricka pattern with American Cut Glass.

The center of the bowl features a 6-point hobstar  formation with crosshatched points. There edge of the bowl alternates – one field features a deep hobstar with both strawberry-diamond cutting beneath and above it. The other formation features a 5 point star with clear center and crosshatching between two of the points. This star is surrounded on all sides by fan cutting.

The overall effect of this design is stunning and unusual. The piece is in immaculate condition, on a beautiful blown blank measuring 9″ wide and 2″ tall.

This is a pattern I seldom see – named Tiffany by someone years ago, it is not actually an identified design. It features rich, lapidary cut centers of hobstars that show off cutting precision, depth, and clarity of the glass itself.

The main motif are huge hobstars with pointy, lapidary centers. Each of these hobstars is framed with two stacked hobstars. These hobstars are separated by a very unusual crosshatching and fan motif that I haven’t seen before. The base of this hobstar stack is held together with deep, horizontal cane. The collar of the neck is finished in cane as well. The plug of the bowl is also finished in a lapidary-center hobstar!

The blank of the punchbowl is exceptional – showing off both the brilliant cutting and clear areas in the pattern. The punch bowl measures 13″ wide and 14 1/4″ tall.

Hawkes are well known for their use of thise type of shape – commonly referred to as a blowout bowl. They resemble snowflakes and have always been aesthetically pleasing and coveted among collectors. This is an older piece and is wood-wheel polished.

A beautiful framed hobstar lies in the center of the bowl, surrounded on all sides by a clear scallop cutting. Pockets of the bowl are filled with alternating Russian and Persian designs. The contrast between that and the clear segue-ways between sections of the bowl is stunning.

This piece is quite heavy and clear, measuring 10 1/2″ wide and 3″ tall. It’s in excellent condition with no visible damage. This is a great old piece by one of the premier makers of the Brilliant Period.

This a great melding of form and design. This dish is cut in Blackmer’s Princess design and it is setup perfectly on this shape.

And 8-pointed star formation takes up the center of this piece – it includes crosshatched triangles surrounding a deeper hobstar. There are vesicas with two stacked hobstars with hobnail in between. The main motif in the pattern are large fans of notching topped with fan cutting. Each lobe of the dish has one of these large fans and it displays perfectly.

The dish is in excellent condtiion with just a few tiny felabites in the cutting. It measures 9” long, 7 3/4” wide, 2 3/4” tall.
