This bowl, cut in the early part of the Brilliant Period by Hoare, is in the Russian and Pillars/Swirl design. It is wood wheel polished with that gorgeous, silky finish. I have never seen this large square bowl shape.
The design features swirling s-shaped bands of Russian interspersed with two clear tusks. This was one of the hardest motifs to cut from the period – requiring the most skilled cutter to shape with the naked eye. The base is finished in a huge Hoare-style base hobstar with 24 points.
The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 9″ wide and 4″ tall. It’s quite heavy on a beautiful blank.
Pattern: Russian and Swirl
