While Tuthill is most commonly known for their realistic, engraved work, they acheived some very richly, fine cut patterns. This is great example – it uses the exact same border of Tuthill’s Wild Rose design, but has all geometric work on the interior of the pattern. It is signed in the center with the Tuthill trademark.
Vesicas of hobnail framed by notching spur off the central hobstar of the design. These vesicas come to a sharp point at a flat hobstar. In between each vesica is a branch of notching with fans that leads to a deeply cut, flashed hobstar. The border of the bowl really makes the pattern pop – silvery crosshatching frames everything so well, especially at the points of flat hobstars.
The bowl is in perfect condition and measures 9″ wide. It’s on a gorgeous blank. This is clearly a very rare pattern – I’ve never seen it before and uses some of Tuthill’s best work.
